Magdalena Arbat

Picture
My name is Magdalena Arbat Otte. I was born in Santiago, Chile where I’ve lived most of my life. I lived in the US twice as I was growing up, both in grade school and in high school and part of college. At present I live in Denver, Colorado.
Art has always been part of my life. I remember having a pencil in my hand from a really early age. I always won art contests at school. Although my dad was an engineer, he was an artist at heart and loved to paint. He's a total Renaissance man. My mom is a pharmacist and although not talented as far as drawing and painting, she loved to create things. She's actually a ballet teacher right now at 70.  I used to paint people mostly when I was younger. I also started painting landscapes. We had a farm in the South of Chile. No TV, so I spent a lot of time painting what I saw around me.

I've tried many styles, realism, expressionism, abstracts and have grown to focus more on color than the subject itself.
I took art classes in college and in private institutes in Santiago, Chile. I had private lessons with Lucia Bravo for one year as well as Rene Poblete who was one of my instructors at Talleres 649 in Santiago, which I attended for 3 years. I also rented a studio and painted there along with other Chilean artists for another year. I finally started using a room in the basement of our condo. At the time I did a lot of work on consignment, including portraits of adults and children.
I have had 3 different personal exhibitions and I’ve had artwork offered on consignment in different galleries, restaurants, businesses and hotels both in Chile and in the US. My favorite medium is oil, because I can diffuse the colors more and it has a certain depth and shine. I like acrylics a lot too because sometimes I feel restless and I want to see finished results fast, also I can produce sharp color contrasts.
I get my inspiration from many places, an object, an idea, a person... sometimes I even find what I'm looking for half way through the painting. I can manage different styles of painting and tend to go through phases depending on experiences or customer requirements. I have done a lot of realistic portraits, but prefer painting an expressionist version of the person - where you can recognize their resemblance by a feature or expression. Tourists in Chile usually requested landscapes and I’ve painted many of Santiago, the mountains, buildings and the countryside. I've sold paintings to people from all over the world and think it’s cool that my paintings are hanging in homes in different countries.
What I have at present I brought from Chile and are pieces from different exhibitions or groups of paintings. Upon request, I will also create new ones. I will discuss prices with you depending on the painting you are interested in. The range is from $180- $1500. Please contact me if you are interested in my artwork at: [email protected]
